Upcoming/New/Old Stuff

Hey, all,

I have some work currently on view and a solo show coming up, so I just wanted to include some info and some links in case any of you wanted to check it out!

Currently on view: All right all you Frida-heads.  This show is for you!  I was very happy to be invited to participate in ChimMaya gallery’s annual Frida and Diego show this year.  I first exhibited at ChimMaya earlier this year, via Margaret Garcia’s
“Stamp Project:  Creating Cultural Currency” exhibit.  After a pretty successful run with the Stamp Project, the curator contacted me about possible prints for their Diego/Frida show.  Luckily, I had some prints from a few years ago of both of these icons, so I was able to submit some work.

The exhibit features about 30 artists from Los Angeles, Texas and beyond, including Jose Lozano, Emilia Garcia, Magu, Ofelia Esparza and more.  For more info:  go to the ChimMaya website.

Sopa de Gabi

At Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana, California.

opening reception:  September 4th from 7-10 p.m.

Come and check out the Santa Ana artwalk on September 4th and stop by the Grand Central Art Center for the opening of my new solo show, ‘Sopa de Gabi’ curated by Jillian Nakornthap of SixpackProjects.   The title refers to the inclusion of food–particularly soup–as a constant element in my prints.  All of the work in the exhibition references a memory, feeling or story passed onto me by my family.  Like secret little recipes, the stories are written down to be consumed by the viewer.

And, while you’re there, check out “Detras de la Cortina,” a group show that includes Magu and Jose Lozano and addresses both the invisibility and ubiquitous presence of Latinos behind the “Orange Curtain.”  It opens at Grand Central on the same night, so you can kill two birds with one stone.

Have a drink or dinner at one of the restaurant/bars in the area and impress your partner with your cultural aptitude and sensitivity.

Did you miss out on Mixed Signals First Official Open Studio???

We had a great time eating gratin and sausages and sipping on some wine while we made work.  It was an open studio so, if you had stopped by, you would have actually seen artists at work, instead of just schmoozing up some patron at a pretentious art opening.

Joel and Vlad showed off their newest work by transforming their studio into a proper little gallery.  Joel even premiered his newest animation via a video projection on the wall.

Raymond hosted a mini-exhibit in his space and featured the work of some local artists, including Abel Rodriguez, Chatismo and Efren Luna.

Natalie and I printed the entire evening.  I printed some linocut stamps by hand as well as on a portable press and Natalie demonstrated screen printing techniques.

Sparrow, Margi and Lauren’s space was open for a limited engagement but we were happy that everyone (minus Neena who had just moved in) was able to participate.

I’m hoping that we can pull it together again for an open studio in late fall/early winter.

In the meantime, keep checking back to see who has a show where or what workshops or classes are being taught by our resident artists.

Enjoy the remainder of your summer!  For us, it’s back to teaching in a few weeks!

NEW ARTIST!

We’d like to welcome our newest collaborator, Neena Chawla, to the space.  We are sad to see Clare Shadduck and her paintings go, but are looking forward to working with Neena in the coming months.

Please join us this Saturday for an Open Studio event at Mixed Signals Art Studio in Signal Hill, CA!

SATURDAY, July 10, 2010 from 4 p.m.-9:30 p.m. at 2700 Rose Avenue, UNIT F in Signal Hill (Rose @ 28th St., between Cherry and Walnut)

Limited parking is available on the lot, so we recommend parking on Rose Avenue or on 28th Street.  We’re the last lot at the top of the hill, on the left hand side.

Ray Alviado will be hosting a group show in his space, with a number of local and not-so-local artists, including Abel Rodriguez, Jason Saunders, Efren Luna, Chatismo and more!

Gabriela Martinez will be printing in her studio, so come and check out some fresh prints!

All of our other artists will be on-hand to welcome you with some great art!  Light refreshments will be provided.  We’ll have a grill going the earlier part of the afternoon, so feel free to bring a little something to contribute.

OPEN STUDIO–July 10th

Please join our resident artists and their guests at an Open Studio event on July 10th from 3-8 p.m. for art, food, music and fun!

We’ll have art installed as well as works in progress on view in each individual studio space.

Refreshments will be available, though contributions are always welcome!

Exit Cherry Avenue in Long Beach

Go south on Cherry until you hit 28th Street.  Make a left on 28th Street.

Take the 1st left at Rose Avenue.  2700 is the last group of buildings on the left.   Parking is first come, first served.

Mixed Signals Art Studio

Welcome to Mixed Signals Art Studio.  We are located in Signal Hill, California, surrounded on all sides by vibrant Long Beach, California.

An artist’s collective that was established in 2002, Mixed Signals houses the studio spaces of nine artists who work mainly in the media of drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking, but who also make their living as art historians,  instructors and museum professionals.
